Jewellery Care, Considered

Jewellery is made to be worn, but thoughtful care can help preserve its appearance over time.

One of the simplest ways to protect your pieces is through proper storage. Keeping jewellery separated can reduce scratching, tangling and unnecessary contact between different materials. Necklaces are best stored individually or laid flat, while rings and earrings can be kept in soft-lined compartments or pouches.

Exposure to moisture, chemicals and cosmetics can also affect jewellery. Where possible, apply perfume, skincare, hairspray and other products before putting your jewellery on. Allow these products to dry first to reduce direct contact with the surface of the piece.

It is also a good idea to remove jewellery before showering, swimming or exercising. Water, chlorine, salt, sweat and cleaning products can gradually affect finishes and materials.

When cleaning your jewellery, gentleness matters. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials unless the care instructions for the specific piece say otherwise. A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is often enough for light surface cleaning.

Pearls and some gemstones require extra care because they can be more sensitive than metal jewellery. They should generally be handled gently and kept away from strong chemicals, perfumes and abrasive cleaning methods.

After wearing jewellery, lightly wiping it before storage can help remove oils and residue from the skin.

Different materials require different care, so always follow the instructions provided for the specific piece.

Good jewellery care is not about keeping pieces hidden away. It is about helping them stay at their best while still allowing them to be worn and enjoyed.

At VAMA, we believe care should be simple, considered and part of the experience of owning jewellery.
